Like all brilliant ideas, HI Minded Creations came about after several cervezas... This following a not-so-epic surf session at our local break on the island of Maui. As usual, we recounted and even reenacted (sometimes in slow motion) each wave of the day while depicting ourselves as entirely way more affluent surfers than we really are. After an hour or so of half-crocked-surf-jibber-jabber we gracefully transitioned into our next topic of conservation…. 'Saving the World'.
Well, we quickly came to the realization that we were ill equipped to take on such a task and decided to immediately downsize our operation… “let's just save Hawaii”. One ridiculous idea after the next was spat out for consideration until the most ridiculous of them all was agreed upon by both parties… We were going to sell trucker hats (and maybe a few shirts). Over the next few months, several meetings such as this took place. Elaborate concepts, ideas and manifestos were scribble-scratched on napkins, coasters, and bar receipts. Neither of us caring too much how business-savvy minds would approach taking on such a task as starting a company; we basically worked backwards and jotted down the exact stereotypes, categorizations, and generic labels that we wanted to avoid at all costs. We would NOT be just another surf company!
As it turned out, these crinkled and soggy ‘documents’ would be our business plan. From this, the same central themes emerged over and over again and thus became our mission statement.
- promote sustainability and environmental awareness
- support local charities and non-profit organizations
- spread good vibes and aloha to all
